Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)

Any of these sound familiar?

  • Do you or your child have an extremely limited number of foods you/ they are willing to eat?
  • Do you or your child become anxious and stressed when exposed to a “new” food, or a different variety of something that you/they typically eat?
  • Is your/their limited diet preventing you/them from enjoying social engagements, birthday parties or playdates?
  • Are you concerned about growth and nutrition?

You or your child may have ARFID. ARFID is a relatively new category of eating disorders. It can occur when one has low interest in food, when one has had a distressing experience with a food (ie choking) or it can occur because of sensory issue. In some cases, the individual with ARFID has several of the above occurring.

When Picky Eating Becomes a Concern

Given that ARFID is a relatively new diagnosis, sometimes medical providers may confuse ARFID with more normative “picky eating”, but ideally it should be assessed when it interferes with growth and nutrition, and enjoying eating socially. Or, when it causes significant stress to the individual and family members.

Assessment and Therapy Approaches

Our clinicians treat ARFID by conducting a thorough assessment, including listing foods regularly and not regularly consumed, teaching the individual about the origins of their food issues, if appropriate, and teaching them anxiety management. Treatment also consists of CBT and exposure therapy. If indicated, we will refer to a dietician to coordinate care.

Binge Eating

At our therapy practice, we specialize in providing compassionate support for individuals of all ages facing binge eating challenges and those navigating bariatric surgery and medical weight loss. Our inclusive approach ensures that every client feels valued and respected, regardless of their background or experiences. By tailoring our therapy sessions to meet the unique needs of each person, we create a collaborative environment that encourages personal growth and healing.

Our Philosophy

Central to our philosophy is a food-neutral approach that promotes a balanced and healthy relationship with food. We believe that all foods have their place, and our therapists guide clients to explore their eating habits without the burden of guilt or shame. This empowering mindset helps individuals let go of restrictive behaviors, allowing them to enjoy a more positive and fulfilling relationship with food.

Affirmation

Affirmation plays a vital role in our therapeutic process. We aim to create a safe space where clients feel seen and heard, validating their emotions and experiences. Our therapists actively challenge societal pressures and unrealistic beauty standards, fostering self-acceptance and compassion. This affirmation empowers clients to engage in meaningful discussions about their relationships with food and body image.

Healing Through Compassionate Care

We are committed to creating a welcoming atmosphere that encourages open dialogue. Our empathetic therapists use active listening and genuine care to ensure that clients feel comfortable sharing their vulnerabilities.

In this nurturing environment, individuals can embark on their healing journeys, working towards a healthier, more satisfying relationship with food and their bodies.
